GANDHI ON SIMPLE LIVING - HIGH THINKING |
Monday, 13 October 2008 15:12 |
From VILLAGE SWARAJ, M.K. Gandhi
INDUSTRIALISM Industrialism is, I am afraid, going to be a curse for mankind. Industrialism depends entirely on your capacity to exploit, on foreign markets being open to you, and on the absence of competitors. There is a growing body of enlightened opinion which distrusts this civilization which has insatiable material ambition at one end and consequent war at the other. High thinking is inconsistent with complicated material life based on high speed imposed on us by Mammon worship. All the graces of life are possible only when we learn the art of living nobly. India's destiny lies not along the bloody way of the West, of which she shows signs of tiredness, but along the bloodless way of peace that comes from a simple and godly life.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES OR VILLAGES |
Village organization is meant to fall under the jurisdiction of the local head ksatriya who governs on behalf of the local Deity. The local brahmanas are ordained to give general guidance to such local ksatriyas. The primary aim of the Global Varnasrama Educational Social and Cultural Organization (GLOVESCO) is to promote such varnasrama communities which will be independent, self-sufficient, self-sustainable and self-governed, as envisioned by Srila Prabhupada and as demonstrated in the Vedic culture. One of our very important "Guiding Principles" at GLOVESCO is that we recognize and uphold that rural communities are intended to be primarily established and organized by grhasta devotees, and this, independent from ISKCON's or any other spiritual organization's direct governance. By definition, a varnasrama community, or a village, is a localized entity designed to be governed by its own members. This is Principle No. 1:"Governance of a village community is primarily the responsibility of its local residents". |
